This type of barrel-shaped mustard pot is very rare in silverware. The first known example seems to be the one made by the Parisian silversmith Nicolas Besnier in 1733. In the regions of the Southern Netherlands this type of mustard pot is even less common, a specimen with the Mons hallmark is kept in a private collection and a pair from Liège made in 1771 by Melchior Dartois is part of the Seneffe Museum’s collections.
